New to the 2009 edition:

  • Tackling of Violent Crime Act:
    • S.C. 2008, c. 6 received Royal Assent on February 28,
      2008. Sections 2 - 17, 28 - 38, 54 and 58 of the Act came into force on May 1,
      2008. They include amendments to the Code which: create new offenses of
      breaking and entering to steal a firearm and robbery to steal a firearm;
      introduce escalating mandatory minimum sentences for serious offenses involving
      firearms; make serious offenses involving firearms subject to the reverse onus
      bail provisions of s. 515(6); raise the age of consent to sexual activity from
      14 to 16 years, and revise the text of the sexual offenses involving children
      and related prohibitions and recognizances accordingly. Section 58 of the Act
      consequentially amends references in the schedule to the Criminal Records Act
      to sexual offenses involving children to reflect the new age of consent.
    • Section 18 - 27 and 39 - 53 of the Act came into force
      July 1, 2008. They include amendments to the Code which relate to crimes such
      as: detection and investigation of drug-impaired driving; increasing the
      maximum sentence for such offenses; making "driving over" causing death and
      "driving over" causing bodily harm strictly indictable offenses, and
      introducing parallel penalties for failing and refusing to comply with a demand
      for bodily substances in circumstances involving death and bodily harm.
  • The majority of the provisions of An Act to amend certain
    Acts in relation to DNA Identification, S.C. 2007, c. 22 and An Act to amend
    the Criminal Code, the DNA Identification Act and the National Defense Act,
    S.C. 2005, c. 25 came into force January 1, 2008. Together they overhaul the
    forensic DNA analysis provisions of the Code.

The Pocket Criminal Code also includes a comprehensive
Index, a Table of Contents, a Concordance for each statute, and the Forms of
Charges from The Police Officer’s Manual for the main Criminal Code
offenses and for offenses under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, the
Firearms Act and the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The Federal
statutes and regulations in this edition are current to May 1, 2008, except
where otherwise noted.
